Meet Ruby

The magic of origami
The history of paper and paper folding is rich and diverse. Paper was invented in China around 105 AD by Cai Lun, revolutionizing communication and art. Chinese paper folding, or Zhezhi, originated in China, but it was Japan that developed it into the highly refined art of Origami. It was likely brought to Europe in the 12th century and today, both Zhezhi and Origami are important cultural traditions with distinct histories and techniques.
Hi Ruby, it's lovely to meet you! You've had an impressive career – you've worked on some incredible projects around the world with brands like Bentley, Disney, and Gucci. Could you tell us a little about yourself and what you do?
I am a designer — but more than that, I consider myself an explorer of world cultures.
After completing her studies and gaining several years of professional experience, Ruby decided to pursue her creative passion.
Even as a child, she was fascinated by the art of Chinese origami lanterns, known as 'Zhezhi.' She consistently deepened her knowledge of the art and found a passion for it.
In her studio, she works on the ideas for a contemporary version of 'Zhezhi' using state-of-the-art lighting technology and developed with the LoopPool an immersive Audio Visual AI series for Space installations and inviting international artists to co-create.
Ruby's journey from childhood fascination to professional mastery culminates in her innovative approach to 'Zhezhi,' blending traditional Chinese origami lantern artistry with modern lighting technology to create contemporary, illuminated sculptures that honor her cultural roots while pushing artistic boundaries.
How have your travels around the world influenced your creative vision?
My journey took me to Paris and Milan, where I wandered through galleries, artisan studios, and quiet cafes. Like Alice in Wonderland, I entered a doorway into a completely new way of living. I absorbed minimalism and developed a deep respect for calm, intentional design.
I became fascinated by the tension between Asian symbolism and European abstraction. My eye was trained by centuries of folding traditions—origami, lanterns, scrolls—and yet my hands learned to simplify.

Ruby, combines Japanese Origami art, with Chinese Zhezhi elegance, and European minimalism. Her enlightening journey and cultural fusion, symbolizing the harmony of tradition and contemporary design. In her Magic Light Studio she creates innovative pieces inspired by her diverse influences, driven by her passion for the art of light.

What led you to design lamps? What makes paper and Tyvek® so special?
Both are lightweight, yet powerful.
My work explores how design can be soft without sacrificing strength. After much trial and error, I settled on Tyvek®—a recyclable and durable material that folds like paper but has the texture of fabric. It's light enough to fit in my suitcase, yet strong enough to stand the test of time.
I love traveling with my lamps—folding them flat, unfolding them in hotel rooms, and letting their warm glow bring a sense of familiarity to unfamiliar places.
How did people react to your work? And was there something you wanted to achieve or say with your work?
A woman in Berlin told me it felt like a warm hug on dark winter nights. That really touched me.
My designs are made to be touched, folded and adjusted.
Each lamp adapts to the user's rhythm—extending when they need light, folding back when they seek calm.
One of my favorite designs opens like a clamshell and folds into a light sculpture.
